Introduction

What is onyx stone?

Onyx is type of chalcedony mineral with a fine grained and homogeneous texture.

It’s the most commonly found the shades of black and white, but can also occur in other colors such as gray, pink,  green, blue, brown and orang. The distinctive bands or stripes found in many varieties of onyx are caused by deposition of different minerals over time. Onyx has been used for decorative purpose for centuries, and is often used as gemstone or in ornamental carvings, jewelry, and home decor.

All kinds of stones

Marble

Marble is a metamorphic rock consisting of carbonate minerals (most commonly calcite (CaCO3) or dolomite (CaMg(CO3)2)) that have recrystallized under the influence of heat and pressure. It has a crystalline texture, and is typically not foliated (layered), although there are exceptions.

Travertine

Travertine is a form of terrestrial limestone deposited around mineral springs, especially hot springs. It often has a fibrous or concentric appearance and exists in white, tan, cream-colored, and rusty varieties.

Onyx

Onyx is the parallel-banded variety of chalcedony, a silicate mineral. Agate and onyx are both varieties of layered chalcedony that differ only in the form of the bands. Onyx has parallel bands while agate has curved bands. The colors of its bands range from black to almost every color.

Granite

Granite is a coarse-grained (phaneritic) intrusive igneous rock composed mostly of quartz, alkali feldspar, and plagioclase. It forms from magma with a high content of silica and alkali metal oxides that slowly cools and solidifies underground

Description

How is onyx stone formed?

Onyx is formed in the same way as other types of chalcedony minerals, through the deposition of silica from ground water.

However, the distinctive banded appearance of onyx is created by deposition of different minerals, such as iron and manganese at different times during the formation process. These alternating layers of different minerals produce the distinctive bands or stripes that are often seen in onyx stones.

That can be, relatively , straight or irregular, and can vary in color and thickness depending on the specific mineral composition of the stone.
